We got out into Cabo Cod to catch the very last gasps of New England's 2018 fall foliage season.

We started in Bourne, in my parking lot.

I clicked off 3 shots before even getting in the vehicle.

We had to hurry, though...

November is when the foliage ends.

Cape Cod is different climatology-wise than the rest of the state.we start with the snow later than they do, we have cooler summers, warmer springs...
![]() |
While we had a warm Autumn, the Cape is cooler than the mainland.

This means that the color change of the leaves kicks in sooner than, say, the southern South Shore.

I check foliage for a living, and the Cape went past-peak later than the South Shore or South Coast.

Depending on how September and October break temperature-wise, this trend can be reversed, but in Autumn of 2018, the Cape was played out first.

You have to look at a lot of brown leaves before finding red, yellow, orange...

A vicious windstorm also played into this malaise. By the time I made it to the more stormy Outer Cape, there was hardly any color at all.

You will need to hustle to see some color on Cape Cod. Every hour counts.
