A Visit To Sauchuk Farm In Plympton

Autumn is here, and that means harvest festival time at area farms.

Sauchuk Farm in Plympton is a fall first round pick. The farm becomes an autumn family fun fair every weekend between now and November 4th. They are open on Columbus Day, just a bit off of Route 58 in Plympton. 

Pumpkins are everywhere, as you might imagine.

No, I don't know what that is...

One must fortify oneself with hot dogs and fried dough.

I saw girls wrestle in cream corn once on the internet, but this was more family friendly.

Speaking of family friendly, I wonder what the artillery is for?

Shooting pumpkins and apples out of a cannon? Sign me up!

I wanted to reenact the machine gun part of the Do Long bridge scene from Apocalypse Now with this cannon, but there were too many kids around, so we shot this video instead.

That mouthy guy from the Vietcong would have run if we started shooting pumpkins at him.

Who hasn't broken a few cornhole rules, right?

Regrettably, we arrived either too early or too late for the Hillbilly Pig Races.

This looks promising...

They haul you and the kids around in cow or bee themed carts. Of course I went, all 250 pounds of me.

I can't recommend spending a crisp fall day out on the farm under blue skies strongly enough, especially for my more urban readers.

Sauchuk Farm has been running a corn maze (maize?) since 2007. They carve art out of corn, meaning they have had a JFK maze, a Snoopy maze, a Tom Brady maze and so forth... this year appears to be Douglas Adams themed.

One could act out the labyrinth finale from The Shining in here if God would provide some October snow. 

In case you think that the corn stalks are props, we popped a few open.

Cape Cod Surf Check, 10/5/18

Tropical Storm Leslie is far offshore, but her surf was reaching us Friday. We sent the team to the Outer Cape to check it out. We started in Wellfleet. 

We only go so far, however...

We arrived at low tide, which took away some drama and limited our close-ups.

We could have tried to go down the dune...

... but No.

No surfers today, but one also got devoured here recently.

One last shot, and we're Audi.

Next stop... Eastham

The wind was letting up by this time,  but we did the best that we could.

If "the best that we could" means "too lazy to walk down to the beach."

To be fair to our staff, we had already been to Scituate, Marshfield, Duxbury, Kingston, Plymouth, Bourne, Hyannis and Wellfleet. You can see the South Shore stuff by clicking here.

South Shore Surf Check, 10/5

Tropical Storm Leslie is way offshore, but we thought that we'd take to the beaches and see what they were up to. 

Today, we went to Scituate, Marshfield, Duxbury, Kingston, Plymouth and Sagamore.

We did Scituate first.

The waves will be at their highest tonight, but I only have daylight time free.

Enough of the Scity, off to Vegas... after some video

We were a touch before high tide, because we had/have some ground to cover.

I didn't mind, because true high tide probably would have soaked me where I was standing.

Off to Deluxebury, after some wind video...

Duxbury is interesting in two ways... one way is that the waves are big, and the other way is to see if the seawall gets more damaged.

The wind was more north than east, and Duxbury faces East, so they had weak surf.

At least the wall is safe... for now.

Kingston gets a shot in before we check Duxbury's kite surfers, or whatever you call this sport.

Some foliage... why not?

Try, Try Again... Bourne Bans Retail Pot

Bourne's elderly population voted to ban retail marijuana sales last night in a job killing, revenue denying disaster of a vote.

Bourne had already voted twice to allow marijuana sales in town, but they kept throwing the issue up until they got a vote on a rainy night when people with jobs and/or kids were unable to attend.

Spouting Jim Crow era reefer madness myths, the anti-revenue crowd scared enough old people to kill retail marijuana sales.

Poof!

Bourne just lost millions in potential pot sales revenue. They also lost jobs, property tax revenue, indirect business revenue from people who will now shop in Wareham and the chance to draw in some money from that summer bridge traffic.

In return, they strengthened the black market, eliminated any oversight on pot sales in Bourne and did nothing at all to eliminate marijuana use in Bourne.

As you can see from the picture at the top of this article, I had no problem getting marijuana in Bourne last night. Gifted, of course. No tax revenue from a sale went to Bourne. The guy who gifted it to me could sell weed to a 12 year old, with only an overmatched police force standing in his way. No funding was generated for schools, emergency services, DPW...

Don't worry, Main Street is thriving!

Wait, what? Oh yeah, Main Street is full of shuttered businesses. It's a ghost town, especially up near her sole tourist attraction, Buzzards Bay Park.

A pot store would fill one of those vacant businesses with a vibrant, guaranteed winner. It would serve an industry that is already in place and thriving, burgeoning with potential tax revenue. It would bleed business over to other stores on Main Street... yes, there are a few left.

Instead, all of that money went away... up in smoke, if you will.

The town is no less free of marijuana, which is readily available all over town.

Of course, safety isn't the real concern of the anti pot prople, which is why you won't see Linda Zeurn or whatever that sea hag's name is crusading against far more dangerous substances like tobacco or alcohol. Those are most likely her sponsors, and she really doesn't care if your kid gets splattered on a highway in a drunk driving accident.

That's why God made Wareham, folks. Plymouth, too. Poised as the last towns on Routes 3 and 25 to buy legal pot in before Cape Cod, they will serve the needs of their smokers and those of the Cape and all of her tourists. They will draw in millions in revenue.

That's the Money Train, G... but that train doesn't stop in Bourne. Bourne seems to be in an irreversible decline.
