A strong coastal storm will strike Massachusetts on Monday. Wind, rain and coastal flooding are the main concerns.
It appears to be a rain event. If it was snow, we'd be using the B word.
The weekend will start with a cold, cold Saturday. Temperatures will get to the 40s on Sunday, but that will also signal the arrival of the storm.
We're expecting an inch and a half of rain (with isolated areas of 2+") on Cape Cod and the South Shore, with lesser amounts on the South Coast and inland. It will be all rain, although icing could occur in NW Massachusetts.
Winds will be 25-35 mph, with higher gusts possible. We've had a stormy Autumn, with lots of stress on the trees. Winds of this speed could take down branches and limbs, which could lead to power outages.
Coastal flooding is a possibility, as the storm should have plenty of time to build the seas. A 1-2 foot storm surge is expected, with waves in the 5-6 foot range on the South Shore and pushing 8-10 feet on the Outer Cape. Tides are astronomically low, hanging around 8 feet. If this storm came a week later, we'd have 11 foot new moon tides.
If things shake out properly, we'll have some people with a camera at some beach somewhere.
